Peepeekisis Cree Nation No. 81 is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Prevention Service Coordinator. This position is based at the Peepeekisis Band Office and is a Term-Full-time classification within the Prevention Department.
Reporting to the Community Based Prevention Manager, the Prevention Services Coordinator provides a holistic approach to the wellness of the child, the family, and the community. This approach is rooted in the knowledge of First Nation law, beliefs, and practices, with guidance from Elders and support from family and community members.
The Coordinator works in partnership with the Community Based Prevention Services Committee and community members to plan, implement, and evaluate community-based prevention projects. This includes identifying strengths and needs to provide appropriate services to families.
- Planning and Development: Plans community-based prevention workshops and group projects related to project-based learning (PBL) goals within existing resources.
- Coordination: Coordinates prevention activities in a project environment with appropriate support staff and resource people.
- School Support: Serves as a resource for prevention projects and develops services for students in coordination with school-based staff.
- Student Consultation: Confers with school staff to develop PBL projects designed to assist at-risk students in achieving educational, career, and personal goals.
- Parental Liaison: Acts as a liaison between parents and community services while facilitating PBL projects to strengthen parental skill sets.
- Community Connection: Responds to information requests utilizing a PBL approach and assists families in connecting to collateral community-based resources for specialized services.
- Operational Flexibility: Functions across school, home visit, and community settings while following a flexible work schedule.
- Administrative: Attends prevention meetings, participates in evaluation processes, and provides additional services as required by the supervisor.
- Grade 12 with demonstrated community work experience; OR
- Certificate/Diploma in a related discipline with demonstrated community work experience; OR
Bachelor of Social Work or a four-year University undergraduate degree in a related discipline (Asset).
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to assess and identify at-risk families and engage appropriate resources.
- Proficiency in professional judgment and critical thinking.
- Ability to work with and support Child and Family Services Authorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of Cree Culture and the political/social objectives of the Peepeekisis Cree Nation.
- Understanding of the impacts of colonialism, residential schools, and intergenerational trauma on First Nations families.
- Knowledge of the influence of the child welfare system and the differences between Prevention and Protection Program streams.
- Valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
- Current CPIC and Vulnerable Sector check required.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends and sign an “Oath of Confidentiality”.
