Governance Development
The FHQTC Governance Development Program’s purpose is to support the Tribal Council mission of servicing member First Nations in the building of community and good relations. Thus, the Governance Development Office focuses on helping FHQTC member First Nations with their efforts to strengthen their local governance structure. The office does this by offering relevant governance training opportunities or providing technical support with policy development and stakeholder relations.
Governance Training Opportunities
The Governance Development office pursues opportunities and partnerships that support member First Nations to develop their governance knowledge and skill capacity in a variety of areas, such as:
- Indigenous Leadership Program (ILP) Training
- Board Governance Training
- Strategic Planning
- Work Plan Development
- Policy Reviews (helping nations begin the process of looking at policies to ensure they align with each other and adhere to relevant legislations and laws)
- Local committee structures (roles/responsibilities)
Additional activities include research and participation in initiatives that showcase best practices in nation building, self-determination, and Treaty Governance.
Stakeholder relations
Forming and maintaining successful relationships with stakeholders is important for any organization. The Governance Development Office advocates support for and towards development of positive stakeholder relationships that are relevant and benefit all parties involved. This is done by:
- Engagement activities and meetings to discuss department funding, legislation, and policy.
- Special meetings, visits and tours of local nations and FHQTC to create awareness and understanding between federal government departments and member First Nations to highlight community priorities, opportunities, and issues.
