Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve

Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve (AHSOR) instills a supportive, caring, and nurturing learning environment for pre-school children. The goal of the program is to support early childhood learning activities that are designed and delivered by First Nations to meet the unique needs and priorities of their communities.

The FHQTC AHSOR program follows the Saskatchewan First Nations Child Care Policies and Regulations, and Health Canada’s First Nations Head Start Standards Guide. The program provides services to children and families within ten of our 11 member First Nations.

Our programming, delivered by early childhood educators, is based on a holistic model that encompasses the emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental health needs of children to inspire a lifelong love of learning. We promote culture and language through daily use of language, land-based learning and activities, and Elders through storytelling, visiting, language, and family activities.

Children ages 2-6 years who are potty trained can attend AHSOR, and children who are 0-2 years who are not potty trained can attend with their parents.

Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve is intended to:
  • Support the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth of each child.
  • Help each child to enjoy life-long learning.
  • Support parents and guardians as the primary teachers and caregivers of their children.
  • Recognize and support the important role of the extended family in teaching and caring for children.
  • Include the broader First Nation community in all activities.
  • Ensure linkages and co-operation with other community programs and services to enhance the effectiveness of the program.
  • Ensure that resources are used in the best possible way to produce measurable and positive outcomes for First Nations children living on reserve, as well as their parents, families, and communities.

Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve is guided by six core elements:

Culture and Language
Education
Health Promotion
Nutrition
Social Support
Parental Involvement

The AHSOR program is required to obtain and maintain certain information about each child who attends the program. The following forms will be provided and required for each child registered in your community’s Aboriginal Head Start Centres:
