Court Workers
FHQTC’s Restorative Justice Court Workers are liaisons between the court and the community. They offer insight into the workings of the court, explain court terminology, and give direction to clients to obtain legal aid or counsel as needed. The Restorative Justice Unit provides information and support services for criminal and family court processes.
Criminal Court Worker
Provides important services that assist aboriginal youth and adults in conflict with the law. Aboriginal court workers help ensure that Aboriginal people who are alleged to have committed a criminal offence receive fair and just treatment before the courts.
Aboriginal Court Workers:
- Explain the reason for the charges to the accused
- Provide general information about legal rights and responsibilities
- Help the accused get legal counsel (Legal Aid)
- Act as a liaison between the accused and the police, defence lawyers, the court, and crown prosecutors
- Ensure the accused understands all court proceedings
- Translates court proceedings for the accused if they are not fluent in English, or will find a translator
- Appear with the accused in court
- Check for Alternative Measures referrals from Crown
- Adjourn court dates for clients if needed
Family Court Worker
Provides information and services that assist with family law matters, such as separation agreements, mediation, support issues, and divorce forms.
