Reintegration
FHQTC Restorative Justice Reintegration Officers work with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff and help identify family and community resources available in the offender’s community. They collaborate with Parole Officers, Indigenous Community Development Officers (ICDO), and/or Indigenous Community Liaison Officers (ICLO) to assist with the development of release plans to prepare for the offender’s release. In collaboration with the ICDO, they will support information sharing in the offender’s home community about the work that CSC does with federal offenders while incarcerated. This will help to promote opportunities for community engagement in planning for the offender’s release.
Pre-Release
Prior to release, Reintegration Officers will connect with incarcerated band members and the community and identify family and community resources and support services. They work with both the Institutional Parole Officers and Community Parole Officers to develop a release plan for the offender, improve their transition to a community, and assist in accessing services (ensuring the offender meets legal and security requirements).
Post-Release to Home Community
After release, Reintegration Officers provide the offender with day-to-day support, refer them to resources, and assist in the connection between the CSC Community Parole Officer and the community. They report behaviour changes or concerns with the offender to the Community Parole Officer (CPO) and when necessary, assist in the development of suspension and revocation mitigation plans. Reintegration Officers also report on which offenders are out in the community, resources they are working with or are recommended, if offenders have gained employment, and any cultural supports they have acquired.
Community Education
Reintegration Officers provide and share information in the offender’s home community about the work that Correctional Service Canada (CSC) does with Indigenous offenders. They also keep all CSC staff updated on the community resources and programming available in the community of release as well explain how these resources will be accessed by the offender.
