Food Security

Food security means having reliable access to enough nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate food at all times to meet people’s dietary needs. It involves both physical access to food and the financial ability to afford it, ensuring that everyone can maintain a healthy and active life.

Supporting food security is crucial because it helps ensure that everyone has consistent access to the food they need for good health. By developing programs to improve food security, we can improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being, reduce health disparities, and support communities in leading healthier, more stable lives. These efforts are key to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving overall quality of life.

Examples of programs that address food security:
  • Community gardens
  • Individual garden kits
  • Workshops:
    • Food preservation and/or reduce food waste workshop
    • Buying in-season produce workshop
    • Canning workshop
    • Dehydrating workshop
  • Cooking classes
  • Food assistance and emergency programs
    • Community meal sharing program: participants make large batches and share with other participants.
    • Food boxes: grocery essentials for little or no cost. Can include dry goods and/or produce.
    • Emergency food pantries: stock food supplies for community members experiencing food insecurity.
